THIS IS MY PRAYER TO THEE
CENTRAL IDEA

Man should have strength to bear the pains and
pleasures. He should have strength to oppose the
cruel and help the poor. He should rise above small
things in life. He must bow before God's will.

COMPREHENSION OF STANZAS

This is my prayer to thee, my Lord,
Strike, strike at the root of penury in my heart.
Give me the strength lightly to bear my joys and
sorrows.
Give me the strength to make my love fruitful in
service.
1. What does the poet pray for?
Ans. The poet prays to God for strength. He
also prays to cleanse his heart of all evils.


2. Why does the poet pray to God to grant him
strength?
Ans. The poet prays to God to grant him strength to
bear his joys and sorrows without tension. He also
wants strength to make his love fruitful by serving
mankind.

Give me the strength never to disown the poor
Or bend my knees before insolent might.
Give me the strength to raise my mind high above
daily trifles.
And give me the strength to surrender my strength
to
Thy will with love.
1. What does the poet need strength for?
Answers 1. The poet needs strength to enable him to help the poor and resist insulting might. He also needs strength to rise above small things in life.

2. The word "strength" is repeated in last two
lines. Who does it refer to? Or Why does the poet repeat the words."Give me the strength"?
Ans. In the first line it refers to God. In the second line it refers to the poet. Or The poet repeats the words, "Give me the strength" because he needs strength for many things.
