A Letter to God

0.1. Why did Lencho write a letter to God? Who received the letter and what did he do?
Ans. As a hard-working farmer Lencho was expecting a good harvest that year. Like all other farmers, he was expecting some rain and hoped that a little downpour would certainly boost his crops. It was evening when it began raining outside. Lencho was delighted, but his joy did not last long. The rainfall soon turned into a hailstorm and destroyed his crop completely. The whole valley was now covered with hailstones. Not a leaf was visible-a sure indication of the total loss of the harvest.
Although the loss of his crops had shattered Lencho completely, yet he had firm faith in God.
A simple hearted as he was, Lencho strongly believed that God would certainly help him. In order to inform the God of his unprecedented loss, Lencho wrote Him a letter. In the letter he asked God to send him one hundred pesos to sow his crops again. He put the letter in an envelope, wrote "To God' on its face and put the letter into the mail-box at the post office the following Sunday At the post office, a postman took out the letter from the letter box. He read the address on it and was quite perplexed and amused. In his life he had never seen a letter addressed to God. Moreover. he didn't know how to deliver that letter to God Consequently, he showed the letter to the postmaster. The postmaster was greatly impressed by Lencho's faith in God. He did not want to shake it. So, he collected money from his colleagues and himself contributed a part of his salary. Then, he put this money into an envelope and addressed it to Lencho.

Naturally, he sought his boss' opinion and went to the postmaster The postmaster too, saw the address on it and laughed. Curiously, he opened the envelope and read the contents. On reading it, he became serious. In the heart of his heart, he praised this man for having such great faith in God Finally, he decided to help him. The farmer needed money. To answer the letter, the postmaster surely needed money. But hundred pesos was a huge amount and he could not afford it all by himself. So, he asked the employees of the post office to contribute and he himself gave a part of his own salary The entire initiative was undertaken so that the farmer's faith in God was not shaken. But they were able to collect only a little more than half the money requested for by Lencho The postmaster put the money in an envelope and addressed it to Lencho.

He had asked God to send him the rest of the money also. But he asked God not to send the money through the mail. This was because he thought that the post office employees were a bunch of crooks.

Ans. Lencho was a simple farmer. He was very hard working. But one year, his harvest was completely destroyed by the hailstorm. He had firm faith in God. He wrote a letter to God asking for a hundred pesos. The postmaster saw the letter. He decided to help Lencho. He collected money from his employees. He gave some part of his own salary also. But the money was less than what Lencho had asked tor. The postmaster put the money into an envelope and addressed it to Lencho. Next Sunday Lencho came to collect his letter. When he counted the money he became angry. He wrote another letter to God. He asked God to send him the rest of money. But he asked God not to send the money through the mail as the employees of the post office were a bunch of crooks.

Q.4. Lencho described the post office employees as a 'bunch of crooks'. Were they really a bunch of crooks? How would you describe them?
Ans. A crook is a person who cheats others. He earns his living by dishonest means. Lencho requested God for a hundred pesos. He received a letter in mail. When he opened it he found seventy pesos in it. He thought that the post office employees had taken the rest of thirty pesos. So he called them a bunch of crooks. But in fact, they were kind and generous people. They did not want to shake Lencho's faith in God. So they raised money to help him. But they could not raise a hundred pesos So they put seventy pesos in an envelope and addressed it to Lencho. The post office employees were good people. They did an act of kindness and charity. It was wrong for Lencho to call them a bunch of crooks.

Q.5. Why did Lencho need God's help?
Ans. Lencho was expecting a good harvest that year Like all other farmers, he was expecting some rain and hoped that a little downpour would certainly boost his crops. It was evening when it began raining outside. Leneho was delighted, but his joy did not last long. Q.6. Are there people like Lencho in the real world? What kind of a person would you say he is? You may select appropriate words from the box to answer the question.
ungrateful
greedy            selfish            naive            comical            stupid            unquestioning
Ans. This world is full of several kinds of people While there are many who are shrewd, greedy, and cunning and selfish; there are numerous others that can be called simple hearted, gullible and unquestioning.
Our Lencho is a cute, simple hearted fellow It seems he is miles away from the wicked ways of the world and religiously believes in what has been taught to him about God. He thinks that God has sent him money through the post office.Though there are people in the world who have infinite faith in God and his creation, but a faith like that of Lencho is hard to find, it seems.

Q.7. How, do you think, did the postmaster feel when he received Lencho's second letter? What do you think he should have done?
Ans. When Lencho opened the letter, he found only seventy pesos in it. He thought that God could not have made this mistake. He believed that the post office employees had cheated him. So he wrote another letter to God complaining that the post office employees were a bunch of crooks. The story does not tell us what the postmaster felt when he received the second letter. However, it is quite natural that he must have felt shocked. It is possible that he realized that sometimes even good intentions are misunderstood. From this story we clearly know that he was a nice fellow. Despite all the shock he received on reading Lencho's second letter, he would not clarify the situation. He was impressed with Lencho's faith in God. Any explanation would shatter that faith to pieces. In my opinion, he would arrange the remaining money and send it to Lencho, this time again through the post office. This would kill two birds with one stone. Lencho's faith would remain intact and his opinion about post office employees would also change.

Q. 8. There are two kinds of conflict in the story: between humans and nature, and between humans themselves. How are these conflicts illustrated?
Ans. The conflict between humans and nature is illustrated by the destruction of Lencho's crops by the hailstorm. Lencho had worked really hard on his fields and the harvest was really important for him. He required the money to feed his family. However, the nature turned violent. The rains were accompanied by a hailstorm, which destroyed the crops. The story also illustrates another conflict, between humans themselves. The postmaster, along with the help of the other post office employees, sent Lencho the money that they could manage to collect. They were not related to Lencho in any manner. It was an act of kindness and selflessness on their part. Even though they did a good deed, Lencho blamed them for taking away some amount of money. He called them "a bunch of crooks". This shows that man does not have faith in his fellow humans, there by giving rise to this conflict.
