Q.1. What did Lencho hope for? 
Ans. Lencho's crop was almost ready. It just needed a downpour and he hoped that it would rain soon and his crop of corn would be saved. 

Q.2. Why did Lencho say the raindrops were like "new coins?
Ans. As raindrops would have helped in getting a better harvest, resulting in more prosperity, so Lencho compared them with new coins. Actually, his crop needed rain to be a good harvest. Good harvest was like money for him So when it rained he saw the raindrops in the form of 'new coins'. 

Q.3. How did the rain change? What happened to Lencho's fields?
Ans. The rain changed to hailstorm, All the crop in the field was destroyed completely.

Q.4. What were Lencho's feelings when the hail stopped? 
Ans. After the destruction caused by hail, Lencho was shattered. The hail had left nothing. He felt that he would have no corn that year and his family would go hungry that year. He could see a bleak future for him and his family. He was worried about lack of food for the coming year.

Q.5. Who or what did Lencho have faith in? What did he do? 
Ans. Lencho had faith in God. He believed that God could see everything and would help him out. Lencho wrote a letter to the God, explained his situation and asked for some money from God.

 Ans. The postmaster read Lencho's letter to God. 

Q.7. What did the postmaster do then?
Ans. The postmaster was deeply touched by Lencho's faith in the God. He decided that Lencho's faith in God must not be shaken He asked his colleagues to contribute some money so that they could send it to Lencho. 

Q.8. Was Lencho surprised to find a letter for him with money in it? 
Ans. No, Lencho was not in the least surprised to find a letter for him with money in it. He was a simple fellow with great faith in God. He was sure that God would help him. 

09. What made him angry? 
Ans. Lencho had requested the God to send him one hundred pesos But when he opened the letter, he found only seventy pesos in it. He thought that the post office employees had taken his thirty pesos. This very thought made him angry.

 Q.10. Who does Lencho have complete faith in? Which sentences in the story tell you this?
Ans. Lencho has complete faith in God. The following sentences explain this "But in the hearts of all who lived in that solitary house in the middle of the valley, there was a single hopper help from God." "Don't be so upset, even though this seems like a total loss. Remember, no one dies of hunger." "All through the night, Lencho thought only of his one hope: the help of God, whose eyes.. see everything, even what is deep in one's conscience." 

Q.11. Why does the postmaster send money to Lencho? Why does he sign the letter 'God'?
And. The postmaster is moved by Lencho's infinite faith in God. He had never seen a fellow with such indomitable faith in God. Of course he takes the initiative to send Lencho some monetary help, but he doesn't want to shatter his faith. In order to keep Lencho's faith intact, he puts the money in the envelope and signs the letter 'God'.

Q.12. Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him? Why/Why not? 
Ans. No, Lencho did not try to find out who had sent him the money. He had complete faith in God. He had requested God for money and was sure he would get it. When he opened the letter addressed to him, he found some money inside. Without having even a speck of any doubt, he assumed that God had sent the money. So, he didn't bother to find out who had sent him the money.

Q.13. Who does Lencho think has taken the rest of the money? What is the irony in the situation? (Remember that the irony of a situation is an unexpected aspect of it. An ironic situation is strange or amusing because it is the opposite of what is expected.) 
Ans. Lencho had requested God for one hundred pesos but he gets only seventy pesos. He has full faith in God and believes that God cannot commit a mistake. So he thinks that the rest of the money has been kept by the post office employees. This is quite an ironical situation because poor Lencho unknowingly curses those employees of the post office who had sent him the money in the name of God. Those who deserve words of gratitude are ironically called 'a bunch of crooks'. 

Q.14. There are two kinds of conflict in the story between humans and nature, and between humans themselves. How are these conflicts illustrated? 
Ans. The conflict between the humans and nature is illustrated in the form of hailstorm which destroys Lencho's crop. The other conflict is illustrated by Lencho's belief that the post office employees are a bunch of crooks. He thinks that the employees have taken a part of the money sent by God to him

Ans. Yes, Lencho is sure that it is going to rain. His crops are ready to be harvested but they just require a downpour. An experienced farmer, Lencho has been gazing at the sky since morning He must have seen some signs of approaching rain, that's why he makes the above remark. True to his prediction, it soon starts raining.

 Q.16. What are the rain drops compared to and why? 
OR 
Lencho calls raindrops 'new coins'. Why does he call them so? 
Ans. Lencho is very happy when it starts raining, He compares the big drops of rain to ten-cent pieces and the little ones to five-cent pieces Lencho needs rain for good harvest. If he has good crops, he will get money. That is why he compares the rain drops to coins.

Q.17. How were Lencho's crops destroyed completely? 
Ans. Lencho was quite happy when it started raining He hoped that the rain showers would certainly improve his harvest and he would get good amount of money on selling the crops. But soon things changed. A sudden hailstorm started and all his fields and the entire valley were covered with hailstones. This hailstorm destroyed Lencho's crops completely.

Q.18. Although the crop was destroyed completely, yet Lencho did not lose hope. Why? 
Ans. It is true that the hailstorm destroyed the crops completely but Lencho did not lose hope. He had full faith in God and he strongly believed that God would listen to his plea and would send him some money to sow the seeds again. 

Q.19. What did Lencho do to overcome the sadness and frustration caused by the destruction of his crops? 
Ans. A torrential rain and hailstorm had destroyed Lencho's crops and had caused a lot of sadness and frustration in his mind. He knew that his family would starve He had a strong faith in God. So, he decided to write a letter and seek God's help in this hour of crisis.

Q.20. Did the letter reach God? Why did the postmaster send a reply to Lencho? 
Ans. No, the letter did not reach God When the postman saw the letter addressed to God, he took it to the postmaster. The postmaster was impressed and did not want to shake Lencho's faith in God So, he sent a reply to Lencho along with a sum of seventy pesos.

Q.21. How did the postman and the postmaster react when they saw Lencho's letter to God? 
Ans. The postman was very surprised when he saw Lencho's letter to God. He had never seen such a letter in his lifetime Out of curiosity, he read Lencho's letter to God and laughed heartily Finally, when he took the letter to the postmaster, he too was surprised. But he was also impressed seeing Lencho's infinite faith in God. 

Q.22. What did the postmaster do in order not to shake Lencho's faith in God? 
Ans. The pOStmaster was a kind-hearted man. He was impressed with Lencho's faith in God and did not want to shake it. So he decided to send him some money. He and the post office employees collected some money. The postmaster also gave part of his salary. Then he put the money in an envelope and addressed it to Lencho. 

Q.23. How did Lencho react when he counted the money? 
Ans. When Lencho opened the envelope and counted the money, he was shocked. The money was less than what he had requested for. He thought that God could not have made a mistake. So, he wrote another letter to God and asked him to send the rest of the money. In his letter, he also made a complaint against the post office employees because he thought they had stolen money from the envelope.

Q.24. Why was Lencho angry when he received the letter? 
Ans. Lencho had asked God to send him a hundred pesos. But when he opened the envelope he found only seventy pesos in it. He thought that the post office employees had taken the rest of the money. So he became angry when he received the letter.

Ans. Lencho thought that the post office employees had cheated him. So he calls them "a bunch of crooks." But they were not crooks. They were kind fellows. They wanted to help Lencho. So they collected seventy pesos and sent the money to Lencho by mail. 

Q.26. What did Lencho write in his second letter to God? 
Ans. When Lencho opened the envelope and counted the money, he was shocked. The money was less than what he had requested for. Consequently, he became very angry. He was sure that God could not have made a mistake. So he wrote another letter to God saying that he had asked for a hundred pesos but he received only seventy pesos. He asked the God to send the remaining amount but not through the mail because the post office employees were a bunch of crooks.
